Tory Lanez entered a not guilty plea in November 2020 and is now subject to deportation after serving up to 22 years and 8 months in jail.
The jury in the Los Angeles trial for the 2020 roadside shooting of Megan Thee Stallion has found Canadian rapper Tory Lanez guilty. Lanez is best known for his song “Say It.”
According to Variety, Lanez, whose actual name is Daystar Peterson, was found guilty of all three felony firearm charges related to an incident in which Megan Thee Stallion, a fellow rapper, said she was shot in the foot after they left a Hollywood Hills party at Kylie Jenner’s house in 2020.
Peterson was found guilty of carrying a loaded, unregistered gun in a moving vehicle, careless discharge of a firearm, and using a semiautomatic weapon in an assault.
The Canadian rapper entered a not guilty plea in November 2020, and now he could spend up to 22 years and 8 months in prison before being deported. January 27 is the date of the sentencing hearing.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon said in a statement, as reported by Variety, “I want to start by highlighting the bravery of Megan Pete.”
“Despite frequent, horrible insults that you didn’t deserve, you shown a remarkable amount of courage and vulnerability throughout your evidence. You endured unfair scrutiny that no woman should ever have to endure, and you have served as an example to others in Los Angeles County and across the country.
“Women are scared to disclose crimes like assault and sexual violence because they are too frequently disbelieved,” he continued, referring in particular to Black women. The myriad ways in which our society must improve its treatment of women were emphasised by this trial for the second time this month.
The lawyer stated, “I’d also like to thank the jury for their time and careful consideration, as well as our trial team for their relentless search of the truth. You spent numerous hours away from your families over the holidays building this case and bringing Ms Pete’s case to justice. We appreciate what you gave up.
Pete sustained injuries to her feet, which she initially reported to the police as being caused by shattered glass but later claimed to be the result of gunshots fired by Peterson.
A doctor who treated Pete after the altercation testified on the witness stand that he had taken out gunshot pieces from her foot.
