In reaction to Siohvaughn Funches-efforts Wade’s to prevent their 15-year-old daughter Zaya from officially changing her name and gender, Dwyane Wade released a statement overnight. The former NBA player criticised Funches-Wade for being a “absent parent” and ignoring their children’s needs in a post on social media.
Wade, who also has a 20-year-old son named Zaire with Funches-Wade, said, “Since this must be the new style of parenting, I guess I have to confront these charges here, which is a damn shame.” “I received a social media post about me pushing our 15-year-old child to be someone she is not and to do things against her will while I’m on a life-changing vacation in our motherland, Africa. These are damaging and severe accusations that have harmed our kids.
Funches-Wade objected to Zaya’s name and gender change in a petition on Tuesday, saying that her ex-husband is making money off of their daughter’s transition. Wade requested “validation of minor’s change of gender and issuing of new birth certificate and change of name” in papers he submitted in August.
Wade wrote in a statement on Thursday that he is “not shocked” by Siohvaughn’s efforts to deny Zaya’s identify and her steadfast efforts to tarnish my reputation.
He said, “I’m quite upset that she keeps finding ways to focus herself and HER demands, without consideration to her children. While Zaya was in class, this report was released. This young person has managed to keep a 4.0 GPA in honours classes while dealing with all the unwanted and damaging attention and discussions about her gender and sexuality from others who are determined not to even try to understand her.
Wade and Funchess-Wade wed in 2002, but he requested a divorce five years later. The athlete finally received sole custody of their two children after a protracted and acrimonious divorce. After failing to give the children back on time, Funches-Wade was detained in 2012 on suspicion of attempting to kidnap them. In his statement on Thursday, Wade referred to her earlier “destructive falsehoods” and said that his ex-wife had forgotten to share parenting responsibilities.
